Rome’s Chaotic Drivers & Traffic
Those traveling to Rome should look forward to the beautiful scenery, architecture and historical sites that the city is so well known for. However, be aware of the chaotic driving scene that awaits. Notorious for very heavy traffic, fast drivers and car accidents, Rome is one of the most dangerous cities for tourists to drive in, mainly because of the Italian’s carefree driving attitude.
When traveling in Rome, you’ll find that drivers drive incredibly close to other cars. In other country’s it’s customary to leave at least a car length between you and the car ahead, but if you do this in Rome you’ll be cut off as someone will surely zip in to fill that space. The driving is very fast-paced and no one wants to be left behind, so everyone often piles in as close as they can to one another, which can lead to many fender benders.
Another difference between Italian drivers and the rest of the world involves using a car’s flashing lights. In most other countries, when you flash your headlights to another vehicle, you’re signaling that they can pass in front of you or turn. However, in Rome this means to get out of the way and quickly! When an Italian driver flashes his lights at you, particularly if you’re in the fast lane, you need to move over and let them pass.
